Why is cybersecurity so important?<\/h2>\n

Why is the importance of cyber security in business increasingly making headlines? In a world where digitalisation is advancing unstoppably, especially in the context of the pandemic, companies and institutions have realised that cybersecurity is key. Not only to comply with legislation, but also to maintain a company's reputation and even its business, which can be compromised by a cyber-attack.<\/p>\n

In this article, we address the importance of cybersecurity today with a series of data from different studies that support the need to address preventive strategies in companies.<\/p>\n

What is cybersecurity in business and why is it so important?<\/h2>\n

IT security or cybersecurity in the enterprise is the set of strategies and actions aimed at protecting everything related to the computer infrastructure in an organisation. Cybersecurity in the enterprise is concerned with all protocols designed to protect the organisation from so-called cyber risks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Today, all large companies and - increasingly - a large proportion of SMEs and the self-employed are concerned about cybersecurity, which causes exorbitant losses worldwide every year.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In Spain, most companies base their cybersecurity on a reactive strategy, i.e. they act once an attack has occurred. However, for many small and medium-sized companies, a cyber-attack can mean the loss of thousands of euros (around 35,000 euros on average) and can lead to closure. Hence the importance of following a preventive strategy such as the one offered by the cyber insurance for businesses<\/a> or the most suitable insurance policies for the self-employed and SMEs, which also respond to possible attacks.<\/p>\n

Some examples of the importance of cybersecurity in today's world<\/h2>\n

Large companies also targeted by cyber-attacks<\/h3>\n

In 2021, large companies such as Glovo, MediaMarkt or Phone House suffered cyber-attacks that they had to disclose, causing a reputation crisis. According to Deloitte in its report \u2018The State of Cybersecurity in Spain\u2019, which addresses the \u201cpost-pandemic\u201d scenario, 94 % of Spanish companies suffered at least one serious incident in 2021.<\/p>\n

9 out of 10 companies in Spain suffered a serious cyber-attack in 2021. In fact, 25 % of them suffered 2 critical cybersecurity incidents during that year.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Insurance, technology and media, manufacturing and banking among critical sectors<\/h3>\n

According to the same study, the sectors with the highest average number of incidents are: Insurance, TMT (Telecommunications, Media and Technology), Manufacturing, Banking and Public Administration.<\/p>\n

Administrations are not spared either: the case of the State Public Employment Service (SEPE).<\/h3>\n

Cybersecurity is not only important for businesses, but also for organisations, which often have sensitive data that can be exposed. The culprit in this cyber-attack was the Ryuk ransomware, an old acquaintance of businesses, which started encrypting the organisation's files.
\n<\/a><\/p>\n

Why is cyber security necessary in business?<\/h2>\n

There is still not a strong culture of cybersecurity and its importance is underestimated in most cases, both by individual users and by companies (especially in small and medium-sized enterprises, known in Spain as SMEs).<\/p>\n

Do you remember the WannaCry ransomware? This data-hijacking virus infected 300,000 computers in 150 countries in 2018 and caused losses in the millions, estimated at \u20ac3.5 billion.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

However, in Spain, companies still approach the issue of cybersecurity in a reactive, rather than preventive, manner. Here are some data extracted from the:<\/p>\n

1. Average cost of an attack: more than 100,000 euros.<\/h3>\n

According to the Google report Current overview of Cybersecurity in Spain. Challenges and opportunities for the public and private sector.<\/a>, 35,000, the average cost of a cyber-attack is estimated to be around \u00a435,000, with 60 % of European companies that suffer one being forced to close within 6 months.<\/p>\n

However, the truth is that this information is already outdated. The most recent study, released in the summer of 2022, estimates an average cost in Spain of more than \u20ac100,000.<\/p>\n

2. Low percentage of SMEs with basic security protocols<\/h3>\n

According to the same study, only 36 % of the SMEs surveyed use basic security protocols, such as two-step verification for business mail.<\/p>\n

3. 40,000 cyber-attacks per day in Spain in 2021<\/h3>\n

According to the most up to date data reported by El Mundo<\/a>, According to a study by Datos101, in 2021 an average of 40,000 cyber-attacks will occur every day in Spain, an increase of 125 % compared to 2020. The least protected and therefore most exposed to cyber risks are users and small and medium-sized enterprises.<\/p>\n

4. Reputational crisis<\/h3>\n

Some types of cyber-attacks affecting businesses<\/a>, attacks, such as theft and leakage, can generate a serious reputational crisis, especially when user data or sensitive company information is exposed. It should be remembered that these attacks account for 50 % of the total. Sometimes the financial losses are manageable, but the reputational crisis can have an insurmountable impact.<\/p>\n

Cyber-risk insurance: an essential tool for 21st century companies<\/h2>\n

These are the main reasons why cybersecurity is so important today and why cyber-risks have become a major concern for large companies, but also for micro-enterprises and the self-employed, who are the most vulnerable.<\/p>\n

As a result, more and more companies are opting for a preventive strategy and the adoption of cyber risk insurance.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
