The 3 personal protection insurances for healthcare professionals

Not all professions are the same. Each one requires a series of knowledge, competencies and skills to be able to carry it out properly. But each profession also has its risks.

Often, when we think of occupational hazards, we think of occupations such as construction or industrial assembly, which apparently may have a higher rate of occupational disability or accident rate. But this is not necessarily the case. In fact, there are specific insurances for occupations that apparently do not reverse risk.

Even in the healthcare field, professionals must have certain situations covered to avoid complications in the performance of their profession. For this reason, there are specific insurance policies with special protection for professionals in this sector, such as doctors and dentists. As their work requires a great deal of precision, they must be protected against accidents or illnesses that jeopardize their professional future.

Let’s take a look at the three most common types of insurance protection for healthcare professionals.

Hand insurance

This is an accident insurance with special coverage. The particularity of the hand insurance is that the insured person has a special indemnity if he/she suffers a total or partial permanent disability due to an accident.

Our advice is to subscribe to what some companies call “special health insurance scale”, and that is why this insurance is recommended for these professions: if we suffer an accident and it affects our thumb, for example, which we use on a daily basis, it can represent an important damage to our professional performance. The scale determines what compensation will be paid to the injured party, and being improved means that you can get to give 100% of the insured capital. Accident insurances, if you suffer a partial injury (a specific part of your body) pay a % of the contracted capital. With the health scale, we will be improving that percentage notably.

This type of insurance is not only valid for hands, but for any part of the body. It is an important complement that social security does not provide, nor does life insurance, which has other characteristics.

Life insurance

The life insurance is another of the most common policies for this type of professional.

When faced with an occupational disability, having coverage that provides security is essential.

The essential difference with the hand insurance is that with the former we only cover accidents, and with the life insurance we also cover any disability derived from an illness (cancer, stroke, heart attack…).

Like the previous one, it is a highly recommendable way to cover our backs in case of possible problems. Whether we are self-employed or employed professionals, a decrease in our income means a significant loss.

To avoid that in addition to the illness or accident, we have to worry about economic issues, it is best to have an insurance that gives you all the coverage, such as life insurance, which covers not only the absolute disability, but also the so-called “total” or “professional” disability.

Temporary sick leave insurance

The third type of insurance is the temporary sick leave insurance. Whether you are self-employed or an employee with a high income, this type of insurance is a good thing to have because it allows us to cover those temporary situations of illness or accident that limit our professional performance. If the other two deal with permanent issues, this one covers us during temporary sick leave.

This insurance allows you to supplement your income if you are on sick leave, to avoid the loss of purchasing power during your sick leave.

You determine yourself when you take out the insurance policy what daily indemnity you would like to receive if you are on sick leave.

As you can see, there are many ways to ensure that any unforeseen event can limit your performance as a professional.
