Does life or accident insurance cover a heart attack?

More and more parents are concerned about the future of their loved ones. For this reason, the purchase of life insurance continues to boom, mainly due to the enormous number of serious illnesses that, unfortunately, we suffer around us. Today we want to focus on myocardial infarction and how to anticipate the problem.

Heart attack: a serious problem

Cardiac problems are sometimes “inherited” from our relatives, or can develop over time. In this sense, it is up to us, at least, to have regular check-ups if we are aware of this history or if we have any type of discomfort.

Specifically, infarction is defined as “the interruption of blood supply to the artery(s)” due to tissue obstruction.

It is the leading cause of death by disease among men in Spain, and one of the main reasons in the case of women.

Covering heart attack through insurance

Let’s see how the insurance world can offer solutions:

  • The health insuranceThe health insurance policy provides us with a wide network of specialists to whom we can turn to for consultations and diagnostic tests. However, it is essential to know that this policy can only be taken out before having suffered any type of problem (if we are diagnosed with a heart problem before taking out the insurance, the insurance company will consider it a pre-existence, and will not cover anything related to that issue). As they say, they will give us an “exclusion”.
  • The accident insuranceAccident insurance: is intended to guarantee a capital sum in the event of the insured’s death or disability. In principle, heart attack, being an illness, would not be covered. However, in most companies, it is set as an optional guarantee that would cover this contingency.
  • The life insuranceLife insurance: this is the policy that ensures that our heirs receive money no matter what happens to us (be it accident or illness). In this way, if we die of a heart attack, our relatives would receive the capital contracted in the insurance.
But not only that, now there is a guarantee that allows us to receive that capital not only when we die or become invalid; if not, by the simple fact of suffering a heart attack, we would receive that insured amount. This is the “serious illness” coverwhich is increasingly requested by our clients.
