The collaborative economy is fashionable, it is a fact. For this reason, BlaBlaCar has been growing meteorically for a few years now, reaching 3 million users in Spain. We will talk about what affects us, which is how the insurance that BlaBlaCar provides to the driver and his passengers covers us.
The insurance offered by BlaBlaCar
As we all know, it is mandatory to have car insurance for our vehicle. This insurance, as a minimum, covers the damages we cause to third parties, cars and people.
In addition to this mandatory insurance, BlaBlaCar adds a free insurance to all its passengers, which basically covers this:
- Accident Capital
- Objects forgotten in the vehicle: covers the cost of sending these goods to the passenger… in this case, we find it a nuisance for the driver, as he/she must do everything, advance the money and then wait for the reimbursement of these expenses.
- Attendance:
- To the vehicle: emergency repair or towing to the “nearest garage” (no assistance to where you would like to have it repaired yourself)
- To individuals: choose whether they prefer to go to destination or return to origin (or, if transportation is not possible, cover accommodation costs).
As they call them, these are all “additional coverages at no cost”, which is welcome, of course.
What conditions must be met for us to be covered by this insurance?
After speaking with the BlaBlaCar team, they told us that the insurance offered by the company is always operative:
- The trip was booked online through BlaBlaCar’s website or app.
- There is at least one passenger in the vehicle in addition to the driver.
- There is no profit in the trip → this is the indispensable condition in BlaBlaCar’s insurance. As they say “car sharing is not considered a professional practice, by sharing among the occupants the expenses of the trip”. If there were a profit, it would put at risk the insurance coverage we are discussing
Regarding the territorial scope of coverage, we have to say that we have not found clarity in BlaBlaCar’s response. Talking to them by phone, as well as asking by chat, their answers have not been concrete; neither in their email reply. As BlaBlaCar’s own policy states:
Only Trips … whose place of pick-up and/or place of destination is (are) in Spain shall be covered by this contract.
For this reason, we cannot guarantee that if the destination were, for example, Paris, this type of coverage would work in that case.
What happens in the event of a claim if I am in BlaBlaCar?
The insurance company supporting this service offered by BlaBlaCar is AXA. A very good insurance company.
BlaBlaCar, on its website, informs about the telephone number to report the accident and receive the necessary assistance: 91 111 69 92.
These alternative means of contact are also included in the policy:
- E-mail addressed to the mailbox: [email protected]
- Telephone communication: 902.054.905
