New developments in Agricultural Insurance for Crops in Catalonia: Evolution and Benefits

In the agricultural sector, protecting crops against extreme weather events and other eventualities is essential to ensure the stability of farms. Agroseguro, the Spanish combined agricultural insurance system, recently presented the new features for the next campaign at a conference held in Lleida on October 22, 2024. This event, aimed at professionals in the agricultural sector in Catalonia, focused on the agricultural insurance lines for arable crops, wine grapes, nuts and olives, which are particularly relevant in this region.

Growth of Agrarian Insurance in Catalonia

The territorial director of Agroseguro in Catalonia, Javier Joana, recalled that the insurance figures in Catalonia marked an all-time high in 2023, with 1,512 million euros of insured capital, 437,000 agricultural hectares and 78 million animals. In 2024, the positive trend continues, with 9% more insured area, driven by agricultural insurance lines for fruit trees and arable crops, among others.

For the second consecutive year, the lack of rainfall has increased the claims rate in agricultural insurance in Catalonia. Up to September, indemnities total 85 million euros, of which 32 million correspond to losses in arable crops, with 90% of the insured production affected. For the 2025 harvest, Agroseguro maintains the 5% bonus for all those insured who renew their agricultural insurance policy before November 15 in modules 1 or 2 in dry land, the most complete insurance options, which include protection against drought, ploughing, hail, non-implantation and non-budding.

Insurance Bonuses and New Features for the Next Insurance Campaign

For the 2025 harvest, Agroseguro maintains the 5% bonus for all policyholders who renew their agricultural insurance policy before November 15 in modules 1 or 2 in rainfed farming.

Among the novelties presented, the insurance for olive groves stands out, which maintains the possibility of insuring two consecutive harvests, eliminating the biennial calculation of the indemnity, leaving only the independent calculation for each campaign.

As for wine grapes, whose subscription begins on November 1, it is especially important after a high claims campaign in agricultural insurance in Catalonia, with 18 million euros in indemnities after 70% of the insured vineyards registered claims in the last campaign.

The Importance of Farm Insurance

Agricultural insurance is a fundamental tool for mitigating the effects of adverse weather conditions and other risks that can affect agricultural and livestock production. Agriculture is a sector that is particularly vulnerable to weather phenomena, and economic losses can be devastating without adequate protection.

PIB Group Iberia offers a wide range of agricultural insurance coverages adapted to the needs of each type of farm. The agricultural insurance lines for arable crops, fruit trees, nuts, olive groves and vineyards are essential to ensure the profitability and viability of farms in Catalonia, where the weather can be unpredictable and damages can be significant.

How to take out Agrarian Insurance?

When contracting agricultural insurance, it is advisable to analyze the different options available, evaluate the agricultural insurance coverage and select the one that best suits the characteristics of the farm. It is also important to be aware of agricultural subsidies that can reduce the cost of the insurance premium.
