Each of us prioritizes certain concerns over others. With home insurance guarantees, something similar happens, and it is that the coverage that is essential for one person may be optional for another. Let’s see what issues are important for everyone in our home insurance.
The difference between container and content
On many occasions, as is normal, in conversations with customers, they confuse what is container and what is content. We will try to explain what each one is in order to make it clearer:
- CONTINENT: are the fixed parts of our house(floor, walls, installations…). What could not be moved to another place.
- CONTENTS: as we pointed out in an entry months ago in which we talked about the contents in the home insurance, it could be summarized as everything that if we were to move, we could take with us. It would be: furniture, clothes, household appliances…
How to value my container and my content
Now that we have clarified what each one is, it is essential to correctly assess both. Many times we hear the saying “lower the contents because I pay a lot”. With these things it is necessary to be careful, since in case of important loss: a fire, a pipe breakage with many damages… an expert will have to go.
At the time of making his expert report he has to contrast the value of the building and contents that is in the policy, comparing it with what he sees when visiting the house. If it is appreciated that there is much more value in the house, a proportional rule will be applied. proportional rule that will be detrimental to the insured. That is why it is so dangerous to reduce capital sums just for the sake of it.
To value both, our advice is:
- Building: ask the insurance broker or the insurance company itself. Thanks to technology, the number of meters, type of dwelling and zip code are cross-referenced, and the insurers already calculate a value for the building.
- Content: here no one can help us, and we are the ones who must make an inventory. Beware of relying on, as many banks do, if I have X meters of housing corresponds Y thousands of euros in content. That does not make sense, because in a 30 meter apartment there can be hundreds of thousands of euros in paintings and furniture.
Where do I take out my home insurance?
This should be based on a set of factors: price, service, coverage… Everyone is free to choose what is in their best interest.
Our advice, without a doubt, is to compare whether you have a mortgage or not. There is the idea that because I have a mortgage I can’t change my insurance… but the reality is that you only get a bonus, which probably doesn’t exceed the savings you can find outside the bank. At least that’s what our experience says.
