What does dental insurance cover?

Table of contents

Dental insurance is one of the fastest growing policies in recent years. Without going any further, between 2011 and 2016, more than 130 %. Thanks to these insurances, you can go to a dental clinic with discounts, and receive certain services for free. Let's see what we are covered for.

Why dental insurance?

With the crisis, the truth is that, in addition to the appearance of certain “low-cost” clinics, people have sought to obtain similar services at the best possible price. Faced with this demand for dentists at a better price, insurance companies have boosted dental insurance, offering two added values, fundamentally:

  1. A range of free services per year
  2. Franchised“ prices: the user pays a ”franchise“ per service, which in principle means a saving for the insured compared to if he/she went without his/her policy.

Logically, insurers have had to adjust their margins, and charge very competitive prices for these insurances (from 50 euros a year we can have one), as the clinics themselves have also reduced their fees. In many cases, from X number of insured persons onwards, no further charges are made; or children are not charged at all.

We also talked about the tax advantages of health insurance and dental services for companies and the self-employed.

What benefits does the dental policy offer?

The advantages of this insurance are clear:

Various free services

Thanks to the dental insurance, free of charge, you can enjoy services such as: fluorisations, x-rays, check-ups and consultations, oral cleaning, simple extractions...

Services with very significant discounts

In the same way, by taking out a dental policy, certain benefits will enjoy economic advantages:

  • Fillings: less than 30 euros, although there are centres that charge up to 60 euros.
  • Metal-porcelain crowns: for less than 200 euros, when the average market price is 250-300 euros each.
  • Wisdom tooth extraction: in some companies for 15 euros, when there are clinics that charge more than 150 euros.

Be aware of the fact that some companies exclusively limit the possibility of going to the insurer's own clinics; While there are other insurers that have a contracted network, but not all of them are their own centres, we prefer the latter. We prefer the latter, as it gives the client more options to choose from.

It is also important to know that certain health insurance policies also include dental coverage, which is logically more limited than the dental insurance itself.
