The collaborative economy is fashionable, that's a fact. That is why, BlaBlaCar has been growing at a meteoric rate for some years now, reaching in Spain the 3 million users. We will talk about what affects us, which is how we are covered by the insurance that BlaBlaCar provides to the driver and his passengers.
The insurance offered by BlaBlaCar
As we all know, it is compulsory car insurance for our vehicle. This insurance, as a minimum, covers the damage we cause to third parties, cars and people.
In addition to this compulsory insurance, BlaBlaCar, adds an insurance free to all its passengers, and which essentially covers this:
- Accident Capital
- Objects left in the vehicle: covers the costs of sending these goods to the passenger... in this case, we find it a nuisance for the driver, as he/she has to do everything, advance the money and then wait for the reimbursement of these costs.
- Assistance:
- To the vehicle: emergency repairs or towing to the “workshop closer to you”.” (it does not give you assistance as far as you would like to repair it yourself).
- To individuals: choose whether they prefer to go to destination or return to origin (or, if transport is not possible, cover accommodation costs).
As they call them, these are all “additional coverage at no cost”.”, This is to be welcomed, of course.

What conditions must be met in order to be covered by this insurance?
After speaking with the BlaBlaCar team, we were told that the insurance offered by the company is always operational if:
- The trip has been booked on a online through the BlaBlaCar website or through its app.
- There is a passenger in the vehicle, at least in addition to the driver.
- There is no profit in the journey → this is the indispensable condition for BlaBlaCar insurance. As they say “car sharing is not considered a professional practice, as the occupants share the costs of the journey”.”. If there were a profit motive, it would jeopardise the insurance cover we are discussing.
Regarding the territorial scope of coverage, we have to say that we have not found clarity in BlaBlaCar's response. Talking to them on the phone, as well as asking via chat, their answers have not been concrete; neither in their email reply. As BlaBlaCar's own policy states:
Only Travel .... whose place of collection and/or place of destination is (are) in Spain will be covered by this contract.
For this reason, we could not be sure that if the destination were, for example, Paris, this type of cover would work in that case.
What happens in the event of a claim if I am on BlaBlaCar?
The insurer supporting this service offered by BlaBlaCar is AXA. A very good insurance company.
BlaBlaCar, on its website, provides information on the telephone number where you can report the accident and receive the necessary assistance: 91 111 69 92.
These alternative means of contact are also stated in the policy:
- E-mail addressed to the mailbox: [email protected]
- Telephone communication: 902.054.905
