Should I include my child in my car insurance?

A very important issue when our children are getting their driving license is to count on the fact that we must expressly include them in the insurance of the private car they are going to use. Let’s see when it is necessary and if it is the same for all car insurance companies.

What is the recharged driver?

Usually, in insurance jargon, we speak of a “surcharged” driver. reloaded“when:

  1. A person is under 26 years of age, and/or
  2. You obtained your driver’s license less than two years ago.

We understand surcharged as a term used by insurance companies to refer to drivers with a higher risk than those with driving experience.

All this means that everyone who meets any of its requirements must be included in the policy as a driver. If this were not the case, the company could not provide coverage in the event of a claim in which the driver was recharged. It would be necessary to check the policy conditions to verify if this is included in the limiting clauses.

In this article, we explain how to get cheap car insurance for young drivers.

Are the same criteria used to consider “reloaded”?

The answer is emphatically NO. Here is the biggest risk of all: we must be careful with which company we are insured with and check this circumstance.

Example: some companies stop recharging at 25 years of age and 2 years of driving license, others at 27 years of age, some at 23; but, at the same time, some at 5 years after obtaining the driving license.

See companies that it does not matter when they obtain their license, such as Allianzas long as they are at least 25 years old. In other cases the minimum age is set at 20 years, such as Mutua Madrileñabecause they do require 2 years of license. However, these are the conditions that we have negotiated at the moment, so you should consult our specific policy.

Main drivers and occasional drivers

Most companies allow the declaration of one or more occasional drivers in addition to the regular driver who is considered the policy holder.

This fact is very beneficial, since it allows the persons who frequently use the vehicle to be expressly stated in the policy. We work with companies that do not apply a premium surcharge for this fact, although there are some insurers that do.

Although it is not mandatory to declare all these persons (except when they are recharged), we will now see that it is advisable.

Our advice: should I include my child in my car insurance?

In conclusion, to avoid serious problems that may arise if we do not have our children declared, we must:

  1. Let us know what consideration my company gives to young drivers or recent “graduates”.
  2. Act accordingly, and declare them in the policy when necessary, as well as with the purpose of generating a bonus (at least for that company, in case they buy their own vehicle at some point).

Another issue would be when a family has several vehicles in the family nucleus, to know in which of all should be declared: some is in the one with more power, others in the one with the most complete guarantees, etc. These cases should be studied on a case-by-case basis.
